Product Description May 8, 2008:
If you are looking for the final movable GPS navigator, you have got to think about the 930 series. TomTom’s 2008 flagship models bring all of their technological advancements with easy use, a sleek design, and a TMC traffic receiver with a 1 year free subscription that’s the “T” part in “930T” to present a cool device. For a couple of year’s now, TomTom’s been driving forward community driven navigation features. They began by introducing with Map Share, which allows you to instantly change street names, street direction, and custom places called points of interest POIs on your device, then upload them to TomTom’s HOME network and download changes made by all of the other users. When you do this, TomTom gets to learn what routes your device was taking. The data is anonymous, but it is given TomTom an huge pile of path and speed data, which they have used to tie community data to routing with their new IQ Routes™ feature, which calculates routes using the real recorded average speeds of travel to compute your trip rather than posted speed limitations, giving you an very correct prediction of how long any given path will really take at any given time.
As last year, the difference between the 730 and the 930 models is the “Enhanced Positioning Technology”. The 930 holds many onboard accelerometers and gravity sensors that help it figure out where it is going if you lose satellite signal for some minutes, which may be very useful in cities with many of tunnels or “urban canyons” of tall buildings.

New TomTom IQ Routes™
Did You Know? IQ Routes technology gives you a faster path in over 50% of all your journeys. |
TomTom gives the fastest and most economical routing possible. IQ Routes uses historical road speed data from millions of TomTom users to compute your best path for that particular time and day. Giving you local knowledge on a world scale..
We all know traffic is different throughout a Monday morning rush hour from a lazy Sunday afternoon. And we all want the best shortcuts to bring us to our destination in the fastest way possible. But heavy traffic, speed bumps, traffic lights, rotaries and pedestrians or shopping crowds can slow you down. That useful shortcut you’re looking for changes based on the time and day so the shortest path isn’t essentially going to be the fastest all the time! Let’s take an example:
- The standard shortest path from Leominster, MA to the downtown Boston shopping district at a comparatively calm time, and without any hold ups, should take an hour and 18 minutes screen 1.
Infographic IQ Routes: but, that same shortest path will usually take you 20 minutes longer throughout a busier period reality screen 2
Using ‘local knowledge’ gained from the real travel experiences of thousands of TomTom users on these roads, IQ Routes™ instantly works out your best path from Leominster to Downtown Boston. It also calculates your realistic journey time, depending on real speeds people are able to drive, not just speed limitations. Screen 3
As you may be able to see, in this case your path is about 15 miles longer, but will save you twelve minutes and a ton of stress!. Now that’s a shortcut! 12 minutes may not sound much, but it’s over 20% off your journey time. Just think about for a moment how much time that will save you over a whole year… Exactly! And it’s not just urban driving. If its roundabouts, crossroads, schoolchildren or just good old fashioned congestion. Anywhere the traffic flow can differ, IQ Routes can make a real difference.
How it works
- Millions of TomTom users global voluntarily supply us with anonymous historical speed data from each of their journeys every time they connect their device to TomTom HOME.
- As a result, TomTom now has a big database, containing billions of miles of real buyer driving experience, collected over the years from more than seven million TomTom users.
- Using this data, TomTom’s distinctive IQ Routes technology calculates your best path. This path is depending on real speed data driven on roads, not just maximum speed limitations, taking into account any hold ups that may slow you down busy connections, zebra crossings and shopping crowds.
This data enhances the quality of TomTom navigation across the board, but is especially useful in improving the quality of in depth routing we give you for the particular time and day of the week of your chosen trip.
Drive like local So if you drive through unfamiliar regions, you still can drive like a local by knowing the short cuts that are depending on the group driving experience of millions of TomTom users. |
New Advanced Lane Guidance
 |
Extra clearness when you navigate hard connections. See obviously the lane you have to follow at connections, so you don’t miss your turn. At complex intersections, you also get a clear 3D image showing your path through the connection. Leaving you relaxed and safe.
When you approach complex motorway intersections, you also get a still 3D image on your screen that obviously indicates the lanes you have to take. Advanced lane guidance keeps you relaxed and safe through the most complex intersections and in the heaviest traffic. Let’s take an example:
- You’re on the outskirts of Paris, driving on the ‘Autoroute du Soleil’ towards Lille, when a complex connection approaches screen 1
- You have your normal 3D navigation view up to metres from the connection. Screen 2
- From meters till you’re through the connection, your TomTom device displays a clear image of the connection. This shows the relevant road signs with numbers and directions, and a blinking arrow that obviously shows which lane you have to take. Your screen during this has the still image and your position bar remains updated with dynamic info. Screen 3
- As soon as you’re through the connection, your screen reverts to the normal view.
