It is a new model, so bugs are observable every day. It fails to compute pretty much every path from Brooklyn to Manhattan caused by (what it looks to be) a mapping bug on one of the highways. So I have to drive up to the important point and navigate from there. I have seen people having alike problem in other parts of the country and this also is an issue with other models from the new line up (tested on 2495). My expectation is that this will be fixed soon as it is not really satisfactory.
The last firmware update also presented a inquisitive bug where the unit sometimes reboots itself if I miss a turn.
I also had problems registering it because Garmin communicator plug in could not see it on my PC. If you have the same problem, it should be easily solvable, see comments to this post.
Sometimes it also restarts throughout voice recognition. No big deal, really.
Map detail is still inadequate. In 2D view most highways won’t be labeled, which makes selecting a point on map a painful, if not impossible task. Old pre 1xxx Garmins have better map detail and I still much favor 255W for long distance drives. Particularly given that it has better traffic coverage.

That said, I really like 3490 way more then I projected and I think it is a great unit. The UI was re worked and simplified in comparison to the chaotic mess that Garmin was doing for the last 2 3 years. It is nearly as easy to use as old Nuvi’s from 200, 600 and 700 series, but has a much richer functionality. (Ok, the UI may not be now straightforward and I had to explain buyer service rep how to turn GPS simulation mode on, but once you get used to it, it feels great and gets better with time)

One of the best features of 3490 is the easy input. You do not have to suffer through entering the state and the city anymore. Just type the street and the house number and it’ll search for the address in close cities and states, will give you a list of choices , and only if you do not see the one you are looking for, you may be able to type the city and state. For someone who has to commute between two states (like NY and NJ) that could be a nice break. As well, while you type, it offers some number of agreeing street names to decide from. The only weird thing is that the matches do not seem to rely on your previous searches, e.G. If you newly searched for “Broadway” and start typing “B”, you will have to type all the way till “Broadw” before “Broadway” shows up. TomTom (I own 2535) could give it now.

POI search is simplified (even though it is hard to imagine that POI search on Garmin may be made simpler). Many strange GUI solutions made in earlier variants are now re worked into something that gives you a nice experience. POI groups are more obviously defined, restaurant types have more sub categories and you may also search POI by just typing (or saying) the name. Also what is vital, POI search is fast, great improvement in comparison to older variants.
You still have an choice to decide “poi near destination”, “poi near active route”, etc, and selecting those alternatives is much easier than on units released in the last several years. “Poi near active route” choice was re worked and it feels like it is integrated with the new “exit services” feature. If in the past you could get a list of, hotels, with distance, now it could group them by highway name and exit number and for the nearest ones will give the distance to the exit too. I have be aware of here that I had at least one case where with all the bells and whistles and the new UI, the closest gas station it may offer along the path was ten miles away and obliged extra ten minutes of travel time, while my pre historic 255W with same map variant offered a gas station that was one mile away and obliged a 2 minute detour.

Another item that was re worked considerably is adding a via point. It now looks to be integrated with trip planner, so when you attempt to add a new point to your path, you may be able to re shuffle the order of places. The downside of it, as many people complained, is that if you browse a map, it may only show you the 1st leg of the path (as generally, not clear why). This does not seem to be a big issue and if while planning you choose “routes” you’ll be able to see the whole path on map throughout the planning stage.

Speaking of this, still another awesome feature of 3490 is that it offers you some number of routes to your destination and you may be able to pick the one you like. Not just “route A, path B” as it showed up on 3790 and others, but more like Google maps or Navigon. A grain of salt is that when displayed on the map, the colors for alternative routes don’t take into account current map scheme, so in many color schemes they’re pretty much invisible as their color can be alike to the colors of highways and interstates. There’s also no way to see the alternatives in text format.

Now, the most vital part the routing. They made really a quantum leap and a great break through there. For the last three or four years Garmin was way behind TomTom by navigation in big cities and failed to be historically congested roads and delays caused by traffic lights. Last year Garmin rolled out TrafficTrends as a answer to TomTom’s IQRoutes. It is been a complete catastrophe as you may be able to read in many reviews. After all this time I has been surprised to see that TrafficTrends really do work on 3490. The estimated arrival time and routes in NYC have been improved considerably. I’m driving with 3490 alongside TomTom 2535 LIVE and I can not really say that one unit is much better than the other. It is pretty much a tie where TomTom most likely maintains slight lead. Path calculation times on Garmin aren’t bad, but recalculation while driving is on occasion much slower than on TomTom. There can be situation when recalculation takes a while. It is mildly annoying as you may miss an exit or a turn, but does not happen too frequently.
Just to get you many idea how the routing works in NYS.
On my test routes that will include Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn I have got
1) estimated 35 min, real driving time 45
2) estimated 28 min, real driving time 43 (7 minutes unreported bridge traffic + six minutes traffic lights)
3) estimated 36 min, real driving time 41
4) estimated 17 min, real driving time 15.
This timing is with enabled TrafficTrends (TrafficTrends are by default disabled on this unit)

Traffic. I see many of people complaining about it. In New York and around the city everything works pretty well. There does not seem to be much traffic signal out of the city and when I approach a city it looks to get the signal afterward than either TomTom or my old Garmin. Outside of NYC I have seen virtually no traffic coverage on this unit. Have not gone far enough, at most 6 7 hour drives. Regular FM does a much better job.
On a positive side, in the city traffic acquisition is direct, thanks to HD radio traffic. Feels nearly like Live units, but requires a cable to be plugged in.
Of course, initial acquisition is only a part of the picture and usually matters when you start driving. While on your way, it does not matter too much if update frequency is 30 sec or 2 3 min like on devices with FM receivers. What matters more is the quality of info your traffic provider gives you. I have seen a case when TomTom’s HD Traffic properly indicated that there’s an 8 minute traffic on a local street in Manhattan while 3490 tried to path through this street. I have also seen my old 255W (with double Navteq + TTN subscription) showing a better highway traffic coverage. And of course I had some chances to use up 20 40 minutes in traffic that none of my units had any idea about. In general, I’m happy with the traffic information I get on this unit on NYC streets (not talking about out of town) and think it is pretty much on par with TomTom’s HD

Voice recognition works like a charm and “wake up” phrase to activate voice recognition is a cool feature present on Garmins and absent on TomToms. I never really cared about voice recognition and usually could play with it a couple of times and forget forever. On 3490 I really use it, for things like adjusting screen light.

Advanced detours, presented in 24xx series are available on 3490 (and also disabled by default). Looks to work well. Overall, implementation is a bit less user friendly than on TomTom, like when you could attempt to avoid a road by street name, it has a tendency to get too in depth and show you every ramp, so that on complex interchanges it becomes almost impossible to figure out what needs to be selected. Other than that, it is a welcome addition that missed on Garmin for a long time. They have an choice to avoid any square region on map. I tried to use it to block block a permanently closed exit near Lincoln Tunnel in Manhattan. It ended up blocking the whole block that included the whole avenue, which was totally not what I looked for.

Screen high resolution, bright, multi touch, dual orientation and all other bells and whistles. Good.

Finally, not many things that disappoint me. Many are a matter of personal taste, so can be minor for majority of people.
Speed display turns red once you surpass speed bound by one mile. In night color mode red on gray is hard to read as there isn’t enough contrast between the two colors, particularly when you attempt to look at it from a 5ft distance. It is really stressing my eyes and it obviously could take a developer like 30 seconds to somewhat change the colors. I complained before in earlier variants, but still no change.

(VINE VOICE) This review is from: Garmin nvi 3490LMT 4.3 Inch movable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Maps and Traffic (Electronics) I presently have the Nuvi 3790 and nearly did not go for this new unit. I’m now happy I did. I have some trips all over in the next not many weeks and was anxious to get this unit before they began. Had it pre ordered on Amazon, they sent me a note that it shipped , then it did not and got delayed, so I got it elsewhere.

Registering the unit was a breeze. No problem for my Garmin communicator to recognize the unit and ask me if I wanted to register it. Went smoothly. I also loaded safety camera poi’s from a 3rd party and that went well too. I use web updater typically as I can control what gets updated. I had an issue with the 3790 and it had to be replaced (with a refurbished unit). I could NOT load their map updater. I want to be in control of what gets updated. Just my two cents worth of experience.

A word of caution, you must use up many time drilling down all the menu alternatives, since you have many of control over what you want displayed on the screen. The three default buttons seemed good at 1st, but I changed one of them . Left the traffic and mute button and changed the stop path button to where to. It seemed to me easier to hit the button to decide a via point than hit a button twice. My personal preference. You may be able to eliminate all the shortcut buttons if you want. I like the idea of them on the screen though.

Speaking of via points, I like how this unit handles them. You may be able to add many of them on the way. And you may be able to reorder them as to how you get to them and in what order. Not sure if it optimizes the routing for them, but I suspect it does not. I like this approach and control.

I also love the idea of having your beloved poi’s or saved places available as shortcuts on the where to menu. Reminds me of Magellan I have had some of them in the past but like Garmin better.

I also like being able to choose what poi’s you could like to see pop up on the screen as you travel. Reminds me of my Navigons years ago. Really enjoyed seeing for example a McDonald’s near my travels and just driving in its direction when I had a Navigon 7100 and 7200.

I was worried that the new user interface taked away things from me. I love information and the capability to control it. And while the dashboards need many work I found the default one looks to work for me now the best. I expect Garmin will update these along the way. I have pretty much what information I had before available to me and more.

When you compute a path you’re frequently given some alternatives. This happens on the 3790 also, but it is simpler to use on the 3490. Again it reminds me of Navigon. I was sad to see them leave the US market, but Garmin has caught up with their great ideas.

On the 1st leg of my trip I had the 3790 and 3490 set up side by side. The 3490 got going faster than the 3790. Both had been turned on and had assumed signals the day before, so it was an equal comparison when I pushed both on buttons simultaneously. I was well on my way with the 3490 when the 3790 kicked in.

I also noticed more lane help screens on the 3490 than the 3790. I had read that street information was not as prevalent as the 3790, but I selected the more detail choice and have not really noticed much difference.

I have found lane help to be invaluable. I also like how connection views look with photo real pictures and now sharing the screen and staying on the screen till you get there. Much better approach than some seconds for a pop up covering the whole screen in the past.

Arrival times generally differ. It is hard for any GPS to take into account traffic lights and construction on regular streets. UPS years ago programmed their computers to eliminate left turns as much as possible to save gas and time. They save lots and lots of money. It seems right if you think about it.

Also, this is the 1st Garmin unit I owned that doesn’t “recalculating” when a path is being recalculated. It got to be annoying at times. This unit just recalculates with no notice. I also found the voice command feature to be a bit more responsive and correct than the 3790.

I suspect that one reason the 3400 and 3700 series aren’t live like the 1695 is its size. No room for the receiver. I did enjoy the live feature and Google search on the 1695 I had, but it is a trade off for the great size.

This is a compact unit. It is really the 3790 unit size, but a small percentage heavier, just a small . I love this size because I carry it in my shirt pocket when out of the car. Garmin has a perfect case just intended for the 3400 and 3700 series. I could urge you to get it. It is available on for a bit cheaper than the retail price. Garmin Carrying Case nüvi 37xx Series

While it 1st seemed to me to be an incremental upgrade, I have found the 3490 to be faster, easier to use and with more information alternatives. Be sure you use up time going through all the alternatives. Many things you may think are not there or can not be changed really are there and may be changed.

Very useful investment.

10/22/11 Update In the last week I have been to different parts of Central Florida and the Chicago area. I have found the Voice Command feature much better than the Nuvi 3790. More responsive and better accuracy. As well, when on a path and you need a POI you have the choice of looking for it near you, along your path or at your destination. And you may be able to use your voice to decide which choice. Much better feature upgrade.

When you’re arriving at your destination you know get an alert bar with a parking choice. The bar is replaced shortly with a new button on the screen with a P. So now you may be able to easily decide to look for a parking garage, etc. Of course this only happens in regions where there are parking alternatives and could not pop up in a residential area.

Traffic is so far for me hit or miss. I don’t like that the traffic button stays green if there’s no signal being received. Confusing. When it works I like that you get an alert bar at the top telling you of traffic and as with the parking alert above, it gets replaced with an icon of the traffic issue that counts down the mileage to the incident. Nice feature. Also if along the way the Nuvi finds an alternate path that saves time it gives you an alert so you may be able to see the alternatives and change to that routing. Again a nice feature.

Great new unit and I’m more convinced that I made a good choice in going with this unit.

11/4/11 Update Garmin issued a software update that improved map drawing, corrected a routing error when going through tunnels, and improved traffic performance, among some fixes. One evident fix is that the green traffic icon now shows gray when not receiving traffic information, which is a real great update. But as I discovered it just means the traffic receiver isn’t attached. It still shows green when the receiver is attached but not receiving information not a good thing. Traffic of course is reliant on your area. I used many such services as well as Garmin’s NuLink, at times with other units side by side. They all are great on occasion, not so great other times. This HD approach is the new and so far I have had no big issues. Again, keeping in mind that traffic isn’t generally 100, those live traffic journalists report a problem in an area I’m in and it is not there any more (so much for real time, live coverage). But when I was on 495 around Washington, DC, it was spot on with delays and place of start and end. Not bad at all.

The navigation features seem good, though it does work a bit differently than other Garmin units I own, so I’m working through a learning curve. The “Voice Command” feature is GREAT. It has lots of functionality, and recognizes my voice commands almost flawlessly, available commands and alternatives are presented to you on each screen so you do not have to memorize alternatives, it is a CLEAR winner of a feature. The mounting system is easy to use and well intended (I own a Tomtom unit also, which has a awful mount system, so this comment is really vital to irritated Tomtom users). Routing speed is fast (another clear advantage over my tomtom). There are lots of other alternatives I have not begun to play with, like Exit Services, points of interest, customizable buttons on the screen, many destination routing, and on and on.

So what is not to love? In a word TRAFFIC. Or the lack of it. And the advertised “HD Traffic” (whatever that means) was one of the major reasons I bought the unit. I live and work in the Pittsburgh, PA area, and usually drive up and down the turnpike (I 76) to/from work. My tomtom receives the conventional NAVTEQ traffic signal for the complete path at full strength. The 1st 3490LMT I bought never picked up the traffic signal on that path, not once. I called Garmin tech support, they ended up proposing I return it for another, which I did. The second 3490LMT got a SNIFF of traffic the next day, for about 60 seconds, then gone again. To check it, on the way home I really detoured through downtown, and sure enough, it began picking up signal, though never at full strength that I noticed. The NAVTEQ signal my tomtom picks up without issue isn’t registering with the Garmin, less any of the sexy “update every 60 second traffic” features. Maybe it has been supposed to say “updates FOR 60 seconds” not “EVERY 60 seconds.” Har har.

So..I’m at a loss as to if to keep it or return it. I could rate everything but the traffic a hard five stars. I rate the traffic a hard one star. You may be able to make up your mind how vital that feature is to you. For me, I paid a premium price for the unit, with many of value deriving from the traffic feature, and without it I am disappointed.

UPDATE 26 Oct 2012: I ended up returning the unit. I really did like everything about it except the anemic traffic many, and tried to talk myself into not wanting the traffic feature. But I decided that only having a traffic signal for the not many blocks bordering the downtown Pittsburgh area was just too silly Pittsburgh does really have many of traffice outside those not many blocks and it had to go back. I see other reviews complaining about the traffic also. I will wait, and if Garmin releases a new production run with an updated receiver I will think about purchasing then. Till then I will plod with my Tomtom, which annoys me more every day it looks, heh.

For its mainstream feature, navigation, it’s excellent. I had a Garmin 350 before this which I loved but it was stolen from my car. I had a Magellan after that which was crap. The price on this unit was great ($247 Amazon).

I chose it over the 1390T because I opted to not get bluetooth. It’s the only difference between the units. I felt the bluetooth quality could be poor depending on other reviews of bluetooth overall on GPS units. The major reason was in the way majority of people use bluetooth. In a common day I’m in and out of my car frequently. I generally need my bluetooth now in case I get a call. I do not generally need my GPS. And since my last unit was stolen, and theft of these units is a big problem everywhere, I keep the unit hidden or on occasion remove it from the car. If you’re like me but you get this unit for bluetooth, you’ll have to stop and mount your gps everytime you get in the car if you need it or not, just to have blue tooth capability. If you forget and the cell phone rings, you dont have bluetooth. So I bought a separate bluetooth speaker phone from Jabra (very good unit# which is generally attached to my visor, pretty good quality, and generally there when I need it. I saved about $75 by opting for the 1350T over the 1390T.

A not many minor disappointments. The Lane help feature works great but isn’t available everywhere. I used it around NYC and it was useful. I drove through Pennsylvania and upstate NY and it wasn’t available. Marketing material hypes this feature but they neglect to tell you this one point. But when it’s available, it’s a great feature. That brings me to traffic. Same story here. I drived through PA and hit a one hour traffic jam. No warnings from the traffic feature because it wasn’t available in that area. When I got to the Scranton, PA area the traffic alerts started working. It alerted me of a big traffic jam ahead and it rerouted my trip automatically. The reroute could have been a important addition in miles but could be worth it to avoid the traffic, right? I decided to disregard the re route just to test the unit to see if the alert was correct and I was wanting to endure the traffic. As I drove my original path, no traffic anywhere. So had I listened to the traffic alert, I could have driven 50 miles out of my way for nothing. Bottom line is, do not let the traffic feature be a deal breaker for the unit you decide. But then again, I got the 1350T for about the same price as the 1350 #same unit without traffic). Updating the map was more hard than it should have been. I think about myself a technical person with computers and gadgets but the map update didn’t go smoothly and took me some number of tries. I could see where many people will have difficulty with this if they try to update the map.

The voice is deafening and clear, the maps are correct and in depth. It acquires satellites quickly, in less than best situation with trees overhead or tall buildings close. It’s easy to program and the onscreen menus are convenient. It’s thin and reasonably light and movable and the screen is big. But it has one big problem: the cigarette lighter charging system doesn’t supply enough current to charge the GPS while it’s turned on. It’s unbelievable that Garmin could let their unit to be sold under these conditions.

When I received the unit I totally charged the battery (by connecting it to my computer using a USB cable which Garmin doesn’t supply, but I happened to have one anyway). Then I used it in my car, generally plugged into the cigarette lighter. It turns on automatically whenever you start the car, and it turns off automatically when the ignition switch is turned off. But, over this two week period the battery gradually discharged (without my knowledge) till it reached a point where the unit could not turn on, when plugged in to the car charger. Presuming the unit was faulty, I called Garmin and (after 20 minutes on hold) learned that the car charger isn’t up to the task, and that the GPS will gradually lose its charge when it’s turned on, if you have it connected to the cigarette lighter adapter. I believe that means that if you have a long drive, possibly eight hours or more, then the unit may not remain operational during the full trip. Other people have made alike complaints about many of the other Garmin GPS units.

The tech support people clarified how to recover from the low battery situation: you do a “soft reset” which simply involves holding down the on/off button for ten seconds. Then the unit will turn on, but the battery will need recharging. I was told to do this by connecting it to my computer using a USB cable, which Garmin doesn’t supply with the GPS (fortunately I already had one), but I assume you could do the same by connecting it to the car charger and making certain that the unit is turned off while it’s charging.

What a shame that Garmin has made a superior product with a deadly defect. I’ll keep mine for now, but I am going to investigate other charging solutions. Possibly after reading this review, the wizards at Garmin will redesign the charging system for this GPS.

Update (Aug 1/09): I discovered the reason for these charging issues: In the User’s Manual, under “Troubleshooting”, Garmin states that the Nuvi won’t charge if it’s in direct sunlight or if the temperature is more than 113 degrees F (45 deg C). Since I had my unit attached to the windshield, and since I only drive throughout noon, it’s generally in sunlight. This charging rule applies to many other models as well; for any given model you may be able to download the manual from Garmin, turn to the Troubleshooting section, and see if or not they describe a alike charging rule. (The rule is meant to avoid overheating the battery: lithium batteries can sometimes catch fire if they’re overcharged or overheated.) I think this explains why many people encountered charging problems and others have not: it depends on if or not the unit is generally in direct sunlight while you’re driving. Many people use the friction mount and their Garmin sits on the console. Others drive afterward in the day or at night.

(REAL NAME) () This review is from: Garmin nvi 1350 Series 4.3 Inch Widescreen movable GPS Navigator (Electronics) Overall, I’m pleased with the Garmin nuvi 1350 but I do have a couple of minor complaints.

First of all, I do recommend that owners/potential purchasers visit the Garmin website to read through all of the product info and to review the FAQs. Many people have made an issue of Garmin not as well as the USB cable with the device but this didn’t matter to me. The obliged cable is a regular type “A” to mini “B” USB cable. Many other devices use this same cable and I already own a couple of them. (I also heard that if you contact Garmin buyer service, they may send you a cable at no charge.) Other reasons to visit the Garmin site: to register the product, to download the full PDF manual and to install the “my Garmin broker Plugin” for web updates.

Next, my quibbles:
When the 1350 is plugged into a charging device (PC or vehicle), there’s no way to find out when the unit is completely charged. This is inconvenient. To view the charge level, you must unplug the device and turn it on. Only then can you see the battery level. As indicated by the Garmin FAQs, charge time is about four hours using the car cable and eight hours using the PC cable.
One of the features of the 1350 is the speed bound display. But, I find this to be of restricted value. The speed display is usually five to ten mph too high compared with the real posted speeds on the roads being traveled. Consequently, this throws off the estimated destination arrival time.

Finally, why I’m impressed:
When driving with the 1350, I never had any doubt where I was at any given time and I never had any doubt what my next maneuver could be (and is not this the bottom line of any GPS?). The voice commands have lots of volume, are easy to understand and they also give you adequate lead time for forthcoming turns. The commands will also repeat but the voice isn’t annoying. Some number of times, I intentionally missed a turn to test how the 1350 could react. It quickly calculated a modified path depending on my current place.
I also found the screen to be clear and easy to see while driving (in bright sun, shade and at night).
The full manual states that a PDA type stylus may be used for the touch screen. I found this to be convenient (I’m really using a stylus from a Nintendo DS.) While you may be able to surely use your finger on the screen, this will leave fingerprints and smudges on the screen.

Other notes:
I have the 1350 sitting on my dash with the Garmin “Portable Friction Mount” greatly suggested.
My 1350 came with a free case the Caselogic MGPS 2. This case adequately guards the 1350 when it is not being used.

Overall, this was a great buy for my business travels and I could rate the unit as four and a half stars.

I decided to contact Garmin directly. Garmin offered great customer help. The nuvi2595LMT appeared to be the suited GPS for a senior citizen who feared sophisticated technology. The operational booklet seemed a bit daunting at 1st. After trying the 2595LMT out just some times some easily answered questions came to mind. The booklet became easy to comprehend. The 2595LMT became easy to use after three short uses. I would not go anywhere without it. I and my co driver love it.

First off, I have been a long time Garmin user. Had a old Streetpilot GPS that served me well for a long time. I’m familiar with Garmin’s user interface. Things changed with this new nuvi but not so much that the UI feels alien.

+ Voice Navigation feature is good and exceeded my (low) expectations. There are many caveats though.
A) Not all of the features/settings of the phone are controllable by voice. While the feature itself works well, it feels restricted in its usefulness.
B) though voice recognition looks to work well in calm conditions, I did find myself repeating my voice commands while using the device in a somewhat noisy environment (such as driving on a highway with road sound filling the cabin space).
+ Touch interface is good. Just not as responsive (sensitive?) as an iphone. I think this Garmin device has a resistive touchscreen as opposed to a capacitive touchscreen which could explain the responsiveness.
+ the path calculation and place search looks faster.
+ The lifetime map and traffic updates, bluetooth is a plus.

I am going to knock off a star from the ranking as there are different little annoyances with the device.

+ don’t like the search feature; it is not as easy, simple and intuitive as the old streetpilot was. When you search for something, it typically restricts itself to the town you’re in. That intelligence is well and good if it works well but it does not. It’s unable to find the Point of interest (POI) if it is in a close town (Most frequently your searches could fall in this category). You must go through a couple more clicks and inputs before you may be able to find your POI.
+ light changes on switching from car power to battery only power. The light setting does not change but the real light does. You could have to go to the light setting to increase the light of the screen when you switch.
+ don’t like the touchscreen responsiveness or precision. Frequently find myself mistyping when being planned and cautious in pressing a letter.
+ Voice guidance needs to enhance. With the “voice guidance with street names” setting, the device says something like “Turn right on freedom drive”. That is not as useful as saying “Turn right on freedom drive in 500 feet”. I’m having to look at the distance on the unit.
+ Graphical User Interface (GUI) needs to enhance. For example, saving a place to favorites takes many clicks (unlike the old streetpilot unit). Likewise, finding a place of interest takes more clicks than before. Why so many clicks and screens?!!

Overall, I could say Caveat Emptor on purchasing the device. I bought it and am going to continue to use it as I have not found any other new GPS devices which are a cut above this one.

I like the voice activated command. A fun part is that you may customize the car that shows on your screen. Garmingarage has tons to decide from. They have custom voices also. Just plain fun. The real reason I bought it was for the new connection views. They’re so much better than the old ones particularly if you’re in a congested area where the roads get confusing. This is a big step forward for GPS. With the bluetooth too and lifetime maps and traffic, this is a great price for a great unit.

For its mainstream feature, navigation, it’s excellent. I had a Garmin 350 before this which I loved but it was stolen from my car. I had a Magellan after that which was crap. The price on this unit was great ($247 Amazon).

I chose it over the 1390T because I opted to not get bluetooth. It’s the only difference between the units. I felt the bluetooth quality could be poor depending on other reviews of bluetooth overall on GPS units. The major reason was in the way majority of people use bluetooth. In a common day I’m in and out of my car frequently. I generally need my bluetooth now in case I get a call. I do not generally need my GPS. And since my last unit was stolen, and theft of these units is a big problem everywhere, I keep the unit hidden or on occasion remove it from the car. If you’re like me but you get this unit for bluetooth, you’ll have to stop and mount your gps everytime you get in the car if you need it or not, just to have blue tooth capability. If you forget and the cell phone rings, you dont have bluetooth. So I bought a separate bluetooth speaker phone from Jabra (very good unit# which is generally attached to my visor, pretty good quality, and generally there when I need it. I saved about $75 by opting for the 1350T over the 1390T.

A not many minor disappointments. The Lane help feature works great but isn’t available everywhere. I used it around NYC and it was useful. I drove through Pennsylvania and upstate NY and it wasn’t available. Marketing material hypes this feature but they neglect to tell you this one point. But when it’s available, it’s a great feature. That brings me to traffic. Same story here. I drived through PA and hit a one hour traffic jam. No warnings from the traffic feature because it wasn’t available in that area. When I got to the Scranton, PA area the traffic alerts started working. It alerted me of a big traffic jam ahead and it rerouted my trip automatically. The reroute could have been a important addition in miles but could be worth it to avoid the traffic, right? I decided to disregard the re route just to test the unit to see if the alert was correct and I was wanting to endure the traffic. As I drove my original path, no traffic anywhere. So had I listened to the traffic alert, I could have driven 50 miles out of my way for nothing. Bottom line is, do not let the traffic feature be a deal breaker for the unit you decide. But then again, I got the 1350T for about the same price as the 1350 #same unit without traffic). Updating the map was more hard than it should have been. I think about myself a technical person with computers and gadgets but the map update didn’t go smoothly and took me some number of tries. I could see where many people will have difficulty with this if they try to update the map.

First of all, I do recommend that owners/potential purchasers visit the Garmin website to read through all of the product info and to review the FAQs. Many people have made an issue of Garmin not as well as the USB cable with the device but this didn’t matter to me. The obliged cable is a regular type “A” to mini “B” USB cable. Many other devices use this same cable and I already own a couple of them. (I also heard that if you contact Garmin buyer service, they may send you a cable at no charge.) Other reasons to visit the Garmin site: to register the product, to download the full PDF manual and to install the “my Garmin broker Plugin” for web updates.

Next, my quibbles:
When the 1350 is plugged into a charging device (PC or vehicle), there’s no way to find out when the unit is completely charged. This is inconvenient. To view the charge level, you must unplug the device and turn it on. Only then can you see the battery level. As indicated by the Garmin FAQs, charge time is about four hours using the car cable and eight hours using the PC cable.
One of the features of the 1350 is the speed bound display. But, I find this to be of restricted value. The speed display is usually five to ten mph too high compared with the real posted speeds on the roads being traveled. Consequently, this throws off the estimated destination arrival time.

Finally, why I’m impressed:
When driving with the 1350, I never had any doubt where I was at any given time and I never had any doubt what my next maneuver could be (and is not this the bottom line of any GPS?). The voice commands have lots of volume, are easy to understand and they also give you adequate lead time for forthcoming turns. The commands will also repeat but the voice isn’t annoying. Some number of times, I intentionally missed a turn to test how the 1350 could react. It quickly calculated a modified path depending on my current place.
I also found the screen to be clear and easy to see while driving (in bright sun, shade and at night).
The full manual states that a PDA type stylus may be used for the touch screen. I found this to be convenient (I’m really using a stylus from a Nintendo DS.) While you may be able to surely use your finger on the screen, this will leave fingerprints and smudges on the screen.

Other notes:
I have the 1350 sitting on my dash with the Garmin “Portable Friction Mount” greatly suggested.
My 1350 came with a free case the Caselogic MGPS 2. This case adequately guards the 1350 when it is not being used.

Overall, this was a great buy for my business travels and I could rate the unit as four and a half stars.

The voice is deafening and clear, the maps are correct and in depth. It acquires satellites quickly, in less than best situation with trees overhead or tall buildings close. It’s easy to program and the onscreen menus are convenient. It’s thin and reasonably light and movable and the screen is big. But it has one big problem: the cigarette lighter charging system doesn’t supply enough current to charge the GPS while it’s turned on. It’s unbelievable that Garmin could let their unit to be sold under these conditions.

When I received the unit I totally charged the battery (by connecting it to my computer using a USB cable which Garmin doesn’t supply, but I happened to have one anyway). Then I used it in my car, generally plugged into the cigarette lighter. It turns on automatically whenever you start the car, and it turns off automatically when the ignition switch is turned off. But, over this two week period the battery gradually discharged (without my knowledge) till it reached a point where the unit could not turn on, when plugged in to the car charger. Presuming the unit was faulty, I called Garmin and (after 20 minutes on hold) learned that the car charger isn’t up to the task, and that the GPS will gradually lose its charge when it’s turned on, if you have it connected to the cigarette lighter adapter. I believe that means that if you have a long drive, possibly eight hours or more, then the unit may not remain operational during the full trip. Other people have made alike complaints about many of the other Garmin GPS units.

The tech support people clarified how to recover from the low battery situation: you do a “soft reset” which simply involves holding down the on/off button for ten seconds. Then the unit will turn on, but the battery will need recharging. I was told to do this by connecting it to my computer using a USB cable, which Garmin doesn’t supply with the GPS (fortunately I already had one), but I assume you could do the same by connecting it to the car charger and making certain that the unit is turned off while it’s charging.

What a shame that Garmin has made a superior product with a deadly defect. I’ll keep mine for now, but I am going to investigate other charging solutions. Possibly after reading this review, the wizards at Garmin will redesign the charging system for this GPS.

Update (Aug 1/09): I discovered the reason for these charging issues: In the User’s Manual, under “Troubleshooting”, Garmin states that the Nuvi won’t charge if it’s in direct sunlight or if the temperature is more than 113 degrees F (45 deg C). Since I had my unit attached to the windshield, and since I only drive throughout noon, it’s generally in sunlight. This charging rule applies to many other models as well; for any given model you may be able to download the manual from Garmin, turn to the Troubleshooting section, and see if or not they describe a alike charging rule. (The rule is meant to avoid overheating the battery: lithium batteries can sometimes catch fire if they’re overcharged or overheated.) I think this explains why many people encountered charging problems and others have not: it depends on if or not the unit is generally in direct sunlight while you’re driving. Many people use the friction mount and their Garmin sits on the console. Others drive afterward in the day or at night.

For its mainstream feature, navigation, it’s excellent. I had a Garmin 350 before this which I loved but it was stolen from my car. I had a Magellan after that which was crap. The price on this unit was great ($247 Amazon).

I chose it over the 1390T because I opted to not get bluetooth. It’s the only difference between the units. I felt the bluetooth quality could be poor depending on other reviews of bluetooth overall on GPS units. The major reason was in the way majority of people use bluetooth. In a common day I’m in and out of my car frequently. I generally need my bluetooth now in case I get a call. I do not generally need my GPS. And since my last unit was stolen, and theft of these units is a big problem everywhere, I keep the unit hidden or on occasion remove it from the car. If you’re like me but you get this unit for bluetooth, you’ll have to stop and mount your gps everytime you get in the car if you need it or not, just to have blue tooth capability. If you forget and the cell phone rings, you dont have bluetooth. So I bought a separate bluetooth speaker phone from Jabra (very good unit# which is generally attached to my visor, pretty good quality, and generally there when I need it. I saved about $75 by opting for the 1350T over the 1390T.

A not many minor disappointments. The Lane help feature works great but isn’t available everywhere. I used it around NYC and it was useful. I drove through Pennsylvania and upstate NY and it wasn’t available. Marketing material hypes this feature but they neglect to tell you this one point. But when it’s available, it’s a great feature. That brings me to traffic. Same story here. I drived through PA and hit a one hour traffic jam. No warnings from the traffic feature because it wasn’t available in that area. When I got to the Scranton, PA area the traffic alerts started working. It alerted me of a big traffic jam ahead and it rerouted my trip automatically. The reroute could have been a important addition in miles but could be worth it to avoid the traffic, right? I decided to disregard the re route just to test the unit to see if the alert was correct and I was wanting to endure the traffic. As I drove my original path, no traffic anywhere. So had I listened to the traffic alert, I could have driven 50 miles out of my way for nothing. Bottom line is, do not let the traffic feature be a deal breaker for the unit you decide. But then again, I got the 1350T for about the same price as the 1350 #same unit without traffic). Updating the map was more hard than it should have been. I think about myself a technical person with computers and gadgets but the map update didn’t go smoothly and took me some number of tries. I could see where many people will have difficulty with this if they try to update the map.

First of all, I do recommend that owners/potential purchasers visit the Garmin website to read through all of the product info and to review the FAQs. Many people have made an issue of Garmin not as well as the USB cable with the device but this didn’t matter to me. The obliged cable is a regular type “A” to mini “B” USB cable. Many other devices use this same cable and I already own a couple of them. (I also heard that if you contact Garmin buyer service, they may send you a cable at no charge.) Other reasons to visit the Garmin site: to register the product, to download the full PDF manual and to install the “my Garmin broker Plugin” for web updates.

Next, my quibbles:
When the 1350 is plugged into a charging device (PC or vehicle), there’s no way to find out when the unit is completely charged. This is inconvenient. To view the charge level, you must unplug the device and turn it on. Only then can you see the battery level. I have the 1350 sitting on my dash with the Garmin “Portable Friction Mount” greatly suggested.
My 1350 came with a free case the Caselogic MGPS 2. This case adequately guards the 1350 when it is not being used.

Overall, this was a great buy for my business travels and I could rate the unit as four and a half stars.

For its mainstream feature, navigation, it’s excellent. I had a Garmin 350 before this which I loved but it was stolen from my car. I had a Magellan after that which was crap. The price on this unit was great ($247 Amazon).

I chose it over the 1390T because I opted to not get bluetooth. It’s the only difference between the units. I felt the bluetooth quality could be poor depending on other reviews of bluetooth overall on GPS units. The major reason was in the way majority of people use bluetooth. In a common day I’m in and out of my car frequently. I generally need my bluetooth now in case I get a call. I do not generally need my GPS. And since my last unit was stolen, and theft of these units is a big problem everywhere, I keep the unit hidden or on occasion remove it from the car. If you’re like me but you get this unit for bluetooth, you’ll have to stop and mount your gps everytime you get in the car if you need it or not, just to have blue tooth capability. If you forget and the cell phone rings, you dont have bluetooth. So I bought a separate bluetooth speaker phone from Jabra (very good unit# which is generally attached to my visor, pretty good quality, and generally there when I need it. I saved about $75 by opting for the 1350T over the 1390T.

A not many minor disappointments. The Lane help feature works great but isn’t available everywhere. I used it around NYC and it was useful. I drove through Pennsylvania and upstate NY and it wasn’t available. Marketing material hypes this feature but they neglect to tell you this one point. But when it’s available, it’s a great feature. That brings me to traffic. Same story here. I drived through PA and hit a one hour traffic jam. No warnings from the traffic feature because it wasn’t available in that area. When I got to the Scranton, PA area the traffic alerts started working. It alerted me of a big traffic jam ahead and it rerouted my trip automatically. The reroute could have been a important addition in miles but could be worth it to avoid the traffic, right? I decided to disregard the re route just to test the unit to see if the alert was correct and I was wanting to endure the traffic. As I drove my original path, no traffic anywhere. So had I listened to the traffic alert, I could have driven 50 miles out of my way for nothing. Bottom line is, do not let the traffic feature be a deal breaker for the unit you decide. But then again, I got the 1350T for about the same price as the 1350 #same unit without traffic). Updating the map was more hard than it should have been. I think about myself a technical person with computers and gadgets but the map update didn’t go smoothly and took me some number of tries. I could see where many people will have difficulty with this if they try to update the map.

(REAL NAME) This review is from: Garmin nvi 1350/1350T 4.3 Inch Widescreen movable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic (Electronics) After using my friend’s Nuvi in Scotland last year I said I have to have one of these! It worked great and saved us many lost hours while effortlessly helping us through hundreds of badly signed round abouts. He had a basic but dependable Nuvi without many features other than direction finding, which is the major idea. I wanted a dependable Nuvi but with some of the more interesting features. After reading reviews I eliminated the 700 & series because of all the stated freezes. I eliminated any with bluetooth functions for the same reason. After many of reviewing I went with the 1350T. I wanted lane help and I wanted cityXplorer mapping because we go abroad many and I wanted to have improved pedestrian potential. I live in a rural town so free traffic alerts was not too vital but I do use up time in Phoenix, San Diego and LA sometimes so it was a plus.

I ordered the unit just previous to a trip from Phoenix to Sacramento. I am a manual reader so I printed a copy of the information from the Garmin website and read them completely before messing with the unit (the fast start information included with the unit are worthless). Before doing anything else I bought a USB cable so that I could connect to my computer. Everyone should have the cable and it is ridiculous that Garmin does not supply the cable with the unit because you need it to register and get current software. Once I had the cable I connected to Garmin’s website and registered the unit and updated the maps and firmware. It is a little difficult but not too hard.And I am not technical. I also bought and downloaded radar detection software because Phoenix, Tucson and most of Arizona is filled with scum sucking radar detectors. I also did the screen calibration on page 47 of the manual because some number of reviews indicated that it made the touch screen interface more dependable. I wanted to take many out of the way highways on my trip so I programmed in many “via points” to use along the way. They are points that let you to divert to another place or highway while keeping the same final destination programmed. The night before the trip I played with the unit looking into the “browse map” function. It seemed to be a worthless function and it was not responsive with the screen being too small to be useful anyway. Just as I was about to get out of the browse mode the screen went black. The unit was completely charged but I couldn’t turn it back on again. I tried with the car plug adaptor, the USB cable, the on/off button.Everything. The next morning before my trip it still would not start. I sent the unit back and requested a substitute. After to get the substitute I went through the same processes again as outlined above except that I will not use the “browse map” function again. I took the unit on a trip from No. Arizona to Orange County then San Diego and back again. For the most part the unit worked well. It did freeze once and the screen went black again when I programmed in a place. I waited about ten minutes and to my great break it did restart but I was about to toss it out the window if it did not restart. One time in a complicated freeway interchange in San Diego it lost position and started “recalculating”. If I hadn’t recognized where I goed I may have easily taken the wrong offramp.

While traveling through Riverside, CA the Garmin indicated that there was many traffic ahead. I touched the screen to see the traffic map and the screen indicated the length and time of the possible delay. It was a short delay so I continued on and it turned out to be correct. I has been impressed but another time in San Diego it indicated a short delay and there was no delay at all. Just be aware that it is only as good as the info it receives from the reporting station.

For fun I also wanted to load many thumbnail pictures for my home and family destination “favorites”. I could find no directions on how to do this, in the full manual printout so I called Garmin. It is easy to do. Just connect your Nuvi to your computer, double click the Garmin icon and open the Garmin folder. There’s a jpeg folder in the Garmin folder. Drag your jpeg photo and drop into the jpeg folder. Then eject and disconnect your Garmin. To add the picture to a “favorite” choose “favorite”; “press for more”; press “edit”; “change photo”; choose a photo and you are done.

I noticed that when going to a place and returning the directions to and from aren’t generally the same. It on occasion sends you somewhat out of the way either coming or going. I think that is because it looks to have a penchant for giving you right turns instead of left turns when starting out from a place. For example, when departing from a shopping center it may have you make a right turn leaving the center, rather than making a left turn, if it is somewhat out of the way. It is not a big deal but I find that inquisitive.

I know many of people do not want to read the long manual but I believe it’ll save you many of early aggravation and will assist you use all of the nice features this unit has. I have also found that if you take your time and do not start pushing functions before the unit has made a calculation or transitioned to another screen the unit is more dependable.

Pros:
1. Volume works great. I am hard of hearing and 70 is plenty deafening.
2. Satellite answer time is fast and recalculating time is usually responsive
3. Lane help is a great feature particularly on big thoroughfares and freeways.
4. Speaks street names obviously and is amazingly close on correct articulation. (Spanish street names may be fun though). Male & Female voice available.
5. Shows posted speed bound and real driving speed which is a great feature.
6. Turn list looking at is a nice feature particularly in unfamiliar regions with many of turns ahead.
7. I like the time or distance to destination feature. The time estimates to a destination have been quite correct. It is a nice feature particularly on long legs.

Cons:
1. No USB cable included
2. No manual (you must print from website and it is over 60 pages).
3. May lose power and not restart for many time (or not at all as with my first unit). This is the reason I gave it four stars instead of 5.
4. Though I made the screen calibration, when typing in addresses many of letters do not answer as easily as they should.
5. Browse Map feature glitchy and worthless.

First of all, I do recommend that owners/potential purchasers visit the Garmin website to read through all of the product info and to review the FAQs. Many people have made an issue of Garmin not as well as the USB cable with the device but this didn’t matter to me. The obliged cable is a regular type “A” to mini “B” USB cable. Many other devices use this same cable and I already own a couple of them. (I also heard that if you contact Garmin buyer service, they may send you a cable at no charge.) Other reasons to visit the Garmin site: to register the product, to download the full PDF manual and to install the “my Garmin broker Plugin” for web updates.

Next, my quibbles:
When the 1350 is plugged into a charging device (PC or vehicle), there’s no way to find out when the unit is completely charged. This is inconvenient. To view the charge level, you must unplug the device and turn it on. Only then can you see the battery level. As indicated by the Garmin FAQs, charge time is about four hours using the car cable and eight hours using the PC cable.
One of the features of the 1350 is the speed bound display. But, I find this to be of restricted value. The speed display is usually five to ten mph too high compared with the real posted speeds on the roads being traveled. Consequently, this throws off the estimated destination arrival time.

Finally, why I’m impressed:
When driving with the 1350, I never had any doubt where I was at any given time and I never had any doubt what my next maneuver could be (and is not this the bottom line of any GPS?). The voice commands have lots of volume, are easy to understand and they also give you adequate lead time for forthcoming turns. The commands will also repeat but the voice isn’t annoying. Some number of times, I intentionally missed a turn to test how the 1350 could react. It quickly calculated a modified path depending on my current place.
I also found the screen to be clear and easy to see while driving (in bright sun, shade and at night).
The full manual states that a PDA type stylus may be used for the touch screen. I found this to be convenient (I’m really using a stylus from a Nintendo DS.) While you may be able to surely use your finger on the screen, this will leave fingerprints and smudges on the screen.

Other notes:
I have the 1350 sitting on my dash with the Garmin “Portable Friction Mount” greatly suggested.
My 1350 came with a free case the Caselogic MGPS 2. This case adequately guards the 1350 when it is not being used.

Overall, this was a great buy for my business travels and I could rate the unit as four and a half stars.

(REAL NAME) () This review is from: Garmin nvi 1490LMT 5 Inch Bluetooth movable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Map & Traffic Updates (Electronics) Having been a Garmin owner for about five years I had no doubt what brand I goed to purchase, my old Garmin served me well but it was time for a new one and the large screen was a key feature I wanted in my new one.

The screen is remarkable, while going from 4.3″ to 5″ doesn’t sound like much it’s really amazing how more map and info that fits well on the screen. The screen itself is anti glare that works, and bright if you want it, I have the light at 60 and that’s good in bright sunlight. The pictures are crisp and clear, street names and such are auto sized to not obstruct the map but large enough to read easily. The volume when it’s reading out direction is remaining, so deafening I have it also on 60. So a hard five Stars on the screen and voice volume, also as the articulation of the street names!

Quirk: When I 1st got it I was in my office and opened it, plugged it in to just power and fired it up, it kept asking for me to agree to the license terms and no matter how I answered it rebooted itself, did this like four times , then was ok. This could happen every time I turned it on. Not a big issue really, once it “sees” the sats it stops doing it and is good. Little off for the scare factor, it never done it again.

The update procedure is easy but long, probably long on a slower PC or slow internet connection, the map data is big. That said it’s the nature of the beast and Garmin makes it as painless as possible, the registration and update procedure was slick.

Once all updated and prepared to go it’s time to go through the alternatives, you do not have to, out of the box it picks everything, but I think most will find it worth it, there are many of alternatives on how you want it to find routes, deal with traffic (comes with lifetime traffic info), how you want the maps to look in many parts, 2D, 3D, Track top to your direction or top to generally north, and all types of extra info that can optionally be on the map screen. Out of the box Garmin has every bell and whistle turned on which I guess I understand but this is why I say it’s worth to get it where you like. From the factory you’ll only see 4.3″ of map on path as it has four tabs of optional info along the right side. I wanted 5″ of map so I disabled the side tabs in settings, nice choice, you may also pick what tab is showing what info from a good selection of alternatives.

Quirk: If you’re using the traffic info and have the traffic avoidance enabled you may be able to get many really odd routes, since I was just trying mine out around town and to work and back I knew it telled me wrong turns, a little time in the manual and I learned why, it was automatically changing the path around traffic alerts, while this may sound like a good thing and could be if it told you it doed that, in my case it wasn’t, no other path is going to help and I didn’t know what in it doed :) I found you may be able to have the best of both worlds, keep trafic info turned on but disable traffic in the avoidances setting tab. Then it warns you of traffic on your path, allows you to see where, and gives you a detour choice at that point you may be able to take or ignore. It could be better throughout the path calc procedure if it said it had added detours, and when it does it on the fly it should as well, minor quirk once you know. This is a three star feature in the auto mode. Five star could be to tell you and offer y/n detour alternatives for each point.

Junction View to me was one of the most remarkable features, I go through one complex set of interchanges for three freeways with express lanes to bybass interchanges and local lane to pick up any direction to or from any free way, many a people have left on the wrong path. When I aproached it the garmin flipped to connection view and wow, it had a obviously marked path through the maze, and nailed every lane on the money, and the optimum lane for the follwing turn if there was more than one lane leading into it. Nice! Another five star feature, this could have made my 1st time through that a lost safer than the old garmin with just a yellow line through it.

The routes it comes up with are 4.5 star, it hits most very well but will toss some more odd ones out than my old Garmin did, they all do many, I think this could do better, the good news is these aren’t awful routes, just not the better or best generally.

The next four star item is the power cord/FM Traffic radio, it’s like having jumper cables going up your dash, why it isn’t in the unit is beyond me, I’m stumped so far as to how to path the cables many more cleaner than this and have traffic information.

Another choice is to skip the traffic radio and run on battery, with the right settings you may be able to get three hours, but with my settings I can get just over two hours on battery before the warning. The last power choice is just power, that’s an optional cord you must purchase that’s many less bulky than the powered traffic cord. So battery life and traffic radio/power cord is three star.

Bluetooth phone paring was easy and works great, the sound cancelling is pretty good also on its mic, so your caller can hear you and not road sound. Five Star

Another nice feature is the speed bound that shows up in a little speed bound sign icon by your real speed, if you’re going over the bound for the road, the real speed turns red in the display. (I won’t say how I know but it’s a relaible source!) five Star, speed bound signs on many of our local town roads is a problem.

I was impressed that I could pick maximum map detail and it keeps up in the city, throughout fast turns in high street density it’ll occaisionally repaint the screen instead of smooth scrolling with your motion but it does it so fast, unlike my previous Garmin, they it isn’t diverting or leave you hanging with a fractional map. This is five star all the way.

Overall I have to say I’m happy with the Garmin 1490LMT, I couldn’t give it a full five for the things it fell just a little short on to me, but if I was to make the choice on a model again with what I know, I could purchase it again, I think it could be hard to defeat.Garmin nüvi 1490LMT 5 Inch Bluetooth movable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Map Updates and Traffic

I found this little device to be invaluable, for my Spouse also (who, not being a computer person. Now began using it). I’m addicted.I love it. Can not wait to start planning the next trip. I did have two cases of misdirection to regions that weren’t as requested.(1)a Starbucks (was not where I has been directed.I accredited this one to the fact that Starbucks had closed many of its stores in recent months)(2)a restaurant wasn’t where I has been directed. I believe Streets / Lanes / Avenues and Ways played a big part in this misdirection. I love my Garmin nüvi 1490LMT 5 Inch Bluetooth movable GPS Navigator.
One last item. My car comes with OnStar and the 1st cell phone to be turned on in the car is typically the 1st to be picked up by the OnStar Bluetooth phone system (it only handles one at a time).. The Garmin nüvi 1490LMT 5 Inch Bluetooth movable GPS Navigator will pick up a second Bluetooth cell phone and is deafening and clear. Thanks Garmin.

Worked great out of the box. Be prepared, it took four hrs to upload the new maps, but hoping next update does not take that long. Its easy to work and fast to react. One of the best buys I have made newly. My sister has the 13?? Garmin with the 4.7 screen. The five screen does make a difference and now she wishes she had gotten the one I have. Pay a bit more for a bigger screen, you will be amazed at the difference!

(REAL NAME) This review is from: TomTom XL 340 S 4.3 Inch movable GPS Navigator (Electronics) just received my new GPS today, plugged it into my mac, and installed tomtom’s mac variant of their home software. Everything worked well so far and the free map update installed good. There are two major things that buyers have to know:

1) space is restricted on the device. There’s only two GB of interior flash memory and out of the box there was less than 50 MB free. The 1st thing you may want to do is to delete voices in languages you do not use. This will free up a couple/three hundred MB. They can get backed up to your computer so you could generally put them back at some point. Once some space is freed up you will be able to update the device without issue. After removing spanish and french voices, running update which installed a new dave voice, , then installing the free map update i was left with 89 MB free. When i tried to run update before removing the voices, the unit warned me about lack of space and aborted without creating any more problems. Maybe the mac variant of home is more robust than the windows one in this respect.

2) the device only supports USB 1.1 transfers which max out at a bit over one MB/sec and may be slower. So doing a full backup or a map update will take a pretty while (1 2 hours) and this is normal.

For me, those restrictions are more than offshoot by the big, bright screen, text2speech capability, crowd sourced map/route updates, and cheaper southern africa maps (we’re moving there soon). Particularly given the cheap sale price i found. I’ll supply updates as i put unit through paces on cross country trip , then intercontinental move…

I chose Tomtom over Garmin primarily caused by tomtom HOME support, better user interface: tomtom has more information on the screen as well as the street name you are driving on.

Most negative reviews here are from issues updating map which is bigger than the old one (about five Mb larger) and causes error.
But it is easy to go around it.

1. Connect to home computer. Turn the unit on. Choose Yes to connect. Tomtom Home will install on your computer.
2. On Tomtom HOME menu, go to “Manage my ONE XL”. On things on Device, click voices. You may be able to back up then delete all foreign computer voices (recorded voice files are small, so does not matter). Just keep DAVE, and Susan computer voices( you need at least one computer voice for spoken street names). You may want to free up about 130 Mb (much more than you need)
3. Now you may be able to update new map with no problem. It does take a long time. After you are done, you still have 125 Mb extra to download customized things, map corrections at some point. Customized car symbols are really cool, as are start up and shut down pictures. These customized things and map corrections are so small: tiny to 0.5 Mb that with > 125 Mb free, you may be able to keep updating for many years to come.

Pros: 4.3 inch screen, great routing, advanced lane guidance (it does work well), IQ path (faster path depending on historical traffic data), fast GPS fix <30 sec (but you have to connect to computer at least every seven days so that a GPS file may be updated to help fix signal quickly), a little longer for a cold start or if you forget to sync with your computer more than seven days, but it is still around one minute or less to fix the signal. Also strong signal, nearly full bar inside my house. Text to speech (for spoken street names) is computer voice, so it is OK. Recorded voices are nicer but unable to do text to speech. The included Easyport mount is great, simple, stable.

Cons: the screen light at 100 is still not as bright as I want (I also use Tomtom Navigator six on my smartphone with better contrast, brightness) but you still can see good on a sunny day. The computer voices for text to speech aren’t as clear when you drive and play music.

In summary, this tomtom has many of great features for the price. If you do not need bluetooth (for hands free call with your cell phone, which isn’t good anyway because your volume generally appears tiny to the other end), FM transmitter (which isn’t practical if you have to play your CD in the car), or live traffic receiver (which is spotty depending on the information I have read), This 340S is the one to get. Majority of people own smartphones these days with internet, so they can get live traffic, up to date points of interest from Google map, play mp3 and pictures. So you do not really need those features from a GPS device (which is more expensive)

I used many GPS devices like Garmin, TomTom, Navigon, etc.. And the TomTom merchandise generally seem to be superior. Every time I purchase a new GPS, I sit in my driveway and do some simple tests. The 1st is how fast is it prepared to navigate. I do not think anybody will ever be faster than TomTom. Second, how easy is it for me to find a local store I shop at every week. As an example the local Kroger’s grocery store that is close to my house. Again, TomTom may help me path to this quickly and with minimal amounts of button pushing. To be just, other devices can be able to find the same place, but not without having to scroll through 1000 POI’s, or without having to push 50 buttons. 3rd, I need weather and traffic, and as much info as I can get about where I’m, where I’m going, and what is in between.. the more info the better as far as I’m worried. TomTom again is excellent in this area and now with a fitted data connection offered by a cell signal, I can have all the info that I want, anywhere and anytime. I tried the FM traffic variant of this, and the MSN variant of this, but MSN is going to stop offering this service next year (2010), so do not waste your time to get a device that you plan to use MSN on, and the FM signal range and quality of data has left me a bit underwhelmed. Again the TomToms “Live” feature has found a good way to offer real time info to me despite of where I’m. Yes, this feature is free for the 1st three months, , then runs about $10 a month. If you purchase this GPS, attempt the Live feature out for a week or so and if you do not see the value, then go back to purchasing printed maps, because you aren’t prepared for the future of GPS devices. One of the interesting features of the Live service is the capability to use Google search right from the device. At 1st I wasn’t sure what use this could be, then I found myself in a situation where a place I thought should be a POI wasn’t found on the device, or possibly I wasn’t looking in the right place, or had the group wrong. Who knows.. But I went to the Google search feature, and told it what I looked for, and Google pulled up many listings just like it does on your computer, and I selected what I wanted, and the device produced the path from that. So for many reason if the GPS device can not understand or find what you need, then Google is there to fill in the gap. Another great feature of the Live service is the place of cheap gas! Yes, that is right, the Live service can tell you all about the gas prices around you, and assist you get to the cheapest. Who could not gain from that? Also, the “TomTom At Home” software that you install on your computer does a great job of updating the device, make changes to it or plan routes or travel from it. Lots of GPS’s allows you to update the device from the web, but none let as much interaction with the device outside of basic map updates then the “At Home” software. If being able to interact with the GPS device using your computer is vital to you, then I could propose to get a TomTom for now. For me, this device has all you may be able to ask for in a car GPS (PND for you tech geeks), and the price is right. The device is advanced, still easy to interact with, so I feel for a 1st time GPS user, or non tech kind of person, you could still be happy. I have spent a long time on my quest for a great GPS device, and I hope this bit of info will be useful to you on yours.

I think it is just to say that while the idea of the original eTrex was great, the execution was usually disappointing.

It disappoints no more. The Venture HC is the eTrex perfected. It remedies nearly every shortcoming that plagued the original models. The new high sensitivity receiver is surprisingly efficient. Many times I have stood in large open spaces cursing my old eTrex because it would not get a single satellite. Last night I turned on the Venture HC on the bottom floor of my two story house, and it locked onto eight satellites.Through the roof and the upper floor! No more “need a clear view of the sky” messages. Amazing.

The old monochrome display became color, and the user interface is considerably more intuitive, while adding more functionality. The cable, which was serial on last models, was upgraded to USB, another welcome improvement. The case is somewhat wider than before, but the design bears a strong likeness to the original eTrex.

A basemap is included but it is just that basic. It shows the biggest highways, bodies of water, and has many restricted capability to display highway exit services. If you need turn by turn street directions, an eTrex isn’t for you. This is a GPS receiver true to Garmin’s outdoor GPS inheritance.

Promised battery life (14 hours) is near the bottom of the range when in comparison to the present eTrex models, but is still perfectly adequate and posed no problems.

One weakness that remains is Garmin’s waypoint manager PC software. It has the feel and functionality of a software product released circa 1994. Garmin could surely develop a better PC interface. For $49 you may be able to purchase ExpertGPS from Topografix, or download the free variant (EasyGPS)from their web site. Either is far more working than the Garmin OEM software.

Still, the software criticism is a quibble. The Venture HC itself is great. It’s a market changing product that renders all last eTrex models (and many competitors) out of date. , an cheap outdoor GPS receiver that I can wholeheartedly recommend.

(REAL NAME) () This review is from: Garmin eTrex Venture HC GPS Receiver (Electronics) I was totally chessed off at Magellan when my Explorist 100 died under warranty and they refused to support or fix it (this was a new unit!). So I only considered Garmin depending on liking my car unit.

Mac Users:
It’s a bit difficult, but I’m able to use the USB cable and the ‘send to Garmin’ to automatically load waypoints from geocaching.Com. One warning is that they have a Mac firmware web updater and it is new and froze on my try to use it, which blanked my unit. .. I did the update for this unit on a friends PC and it went good.

There are many Mac caching software, but none of them are working for me with this unit. So keep that in mind if you really want to go beyond the web waypoint downloads. That is a bummer, since Maccaching and GeoJournal appear like they’d be great.

The included software doesn’t work on a Mac, so ignore that CD. From the Garmin site, you may be able to download the plugin for Mac to make Safari aware of the unit so you may be able to do the “send to Garmin’ trick. They have the Mac variant of their WebUpdater (the one that hosed my 1st unit) on their site. , you do not need any USB drivers for Tiger or Leopard OSX, so do not worry about them only being for Windows on the Garmin site.

Usage:
Crazy fast turn on and acquiring satellites. We’re thrilled that we can turn it on in the car and it’ll start to pick up satellites now. Our Magellin (an cheap 100 unit) could take awhile outside in cloudcover.

It also looks to save all the time, as the shutdown is fast, with no ‘saving’ note like our Magellin made us wait for.

I guess our only complaint is that we like to use the backlight many and that sucks batteries. It is winter now, and so many days and places are dim, and without the backlight, the unit may be pretty dim to read. It takes two AA’s. It also has a system pref for the kind of battery you use (Alkaline, NiMH or LiOn), why? Maybe to only USB charge when they’re NiMH’s?? But remember to set that to the correct type.

We really love auto loading the coordinates. And with the free account on Geocaching.Com, we get the cache name, GC# and coordinates. That saves tons of time and mistakes. We find ourselves loading up any cache that interests us, just in case.

Accuracy:
The unit looks right on. Our other unit could typically be more like 20 30 feet correct in the woods, and this one led us entitlement to the cache and showed 16′ accuracy at that point under normal tree cover. It also refreshes more frequently than our old unit, so it feels more responsive. No more going 20 feet , then seeing that the arrow just did not update to show we goed the wrong way, or overshot.

Build:
It looks hard and took our last rainy hike well. The back has some a gap, but the seal must lock in good. It uses the ‘D’ lock, so just half a turn to lock and unlock, which is fast and appreciated on a cold cache while changing batteries. We generally had to dig to get the Magellin’s ring out and turning to pop the back.

Thumb toggle:
If you have used the old Garmin’s with button input, the toggle on the front is really welcomed. We zip through data entry and you push the toggle in to accept an entry. It is also a shortcut to Mark your current place (holding down the toggle button). Another tip is that holding down the lower left button brings up the ‘Find’ menu quickly.

Speed:
One thing I noted was that when I went just one setting more on ‘detail’ for the maps, it really cut the redraw speed (which is a tad slow to start with), so that disappointed.

(REAL NAME) () This review is from: Garmin eTrex Venture HC GPS Receiver (Electronics) I got this unit after much research into different brands and, after settling on Garmin, different models. It is a great all around GPS at a great price. It is my 1st, so I can not comment on the increased sensitivity of the HC chip, but I get lots of coverage inside my house, and when I step outside the accuracy goes to about 9′. I could liked the compass and altimeter of the Vista, but really do not have much need for them since I am not an avid hiker, and did not have to use up the extra money.

The Venture HC is great for geocaching. I took my family out on our 1st hunt last weekend, and though we only had about an hour to spare, we had a great time finding caches stashed around a park close. I can see this as a fun family activity on road trips also. The Venture has fitted geocaching features that allow you to download waypoints directly from geocacher.Com (using the free Garmin browser plugin), and mark caches as found right on the GPS. The color screen is readable in sunlight. Though the Venture HC does not have a correct compass, the “compass” page is useful for closing in on the target.

The Venture HC is great for amateur astronomers. My computerized telescope needs to know lat/long/time to precisely slew to and track objects in the sky. I can get coordinates on standard addresses on geocoder.Us, but if I just want to set up at a black site someplace, a GPS is a must. Rather than pay $200 to get the GPS choice on my scope, I can use this general function GPS and just input the numbers into the telescope’s controller, or connect through my laptop. Though any GPS will give you the time and place, not all have as nice a backlit screen as this one, a good thing when you are out in the black. The customizable color schemes (with auto night mode) and the variable backlight intensity are great for astronomy to keep stray light to a minimum.

If I am disappointed with anything it’s with the fitted base map. Again, because this is my 1st GPS I was somehow expecting more detail, not essentially by street names, but surely with respect to canals, mountains, big cross streets etc. The only features I have been able to distinguish are freeways, lakes and cities. There are many mountains where I live and none of them are shown on the map. More in depth topo maps are available, but cost anywhere from $80 $120. I am not subtracting any stars for this, because I am sure all basemaps are pretty much the same. And with 24MB of memory, there is room for decent quality maps.

Garmin updated the firmware for the Venture in February 2008, so one of the 1st things I did was download their free WebUpdater utility to automatically install updates. I had one scary moment when my GPS lost the USB connection in the center of the procedure, and I has been worried my unit could be disabled. But after turning it off and back on it came right back up and, after a second attempt, the new firmware has been installed in about five minutes.

All in all, I am happy with the quality of this unit. It feels tough still light weight, with a nice rubberized feel to it. It is also waterproof, so no trouble using it in the rain. The interface took a little to get used to, but after a while it becomes second nature. The Venture allows you to customize nearly every screen to your taste; as an example, I wanted to have time, elevation and place on the same page for astronomy reasons, so I set one of the screens up to show all these fields. At $130, the price point was perfect: considerably lower than the next model up (sacrificing only the compass/altimeter and microSD slot), and not much higher than plain vanilla black & white units without geocaching features.

I greatly recommend it.

Two different pop ups were observed. 1. “This accessory isn’t supported” 2. “XM isn’t supported.” Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the USB power plug and USB plug receptacle on the nuvi were corroded. They had come that way from the factory and I hadn’t noticed the defect throughout installation. I called Garmin and they told me to return the device to for substitute, which I have done. Got to love for their excellent return policy. Have to question Garmin quality control to let something like this slip through. I posted a picture of the corroded plug and receptacle in the buyer pictures area. Now back to my original review…

In a nutshell, the 1390LMT performed reasonably well. It has features that I’ll never use or will use rarely at best like Bluetooth and EcoRoute. The “Where am I?” feature is useful. The initial satellite acquisition took a couple minutes which is normal. Successive satellite acquisition was pretty fast after the initial acquisition. I like that I’ll never have to pay for another map update. For the rest of the story, read on.

I bought the 1390LMT as an upgrade to my maturing StreetPilot c340 Garmin StreetPilot c340 3.5 Inch movable GPS Navigator. I really dont have issues with my c340. It’s a hard, basic GPS that typically gets me where I want to go. I say typically because the maps are now three years old and it on occasion does not know about new streets and such. Plus, as most GPS’s will sometimes do, you on occasion get directed to non existent places. Someday I will tell you the story of being guided to Home Depot only to find that I had “arrived” but all I saw was a big open field with a bunch of mooing cows but no Home Depot. Another time I was told to turn left into a parking lot and once that happened I was stuck in an endless loop of mis direction by the Garmin. Most hardened GPS users will have alike tales. Being told to turn left when the display indicates a right turn and things of this nature.

In any way, I wasn’t wanting to pay the high price for a map upgrade for my old and relatively big & clunky c340 so I started to search for a substitute. I looked at and read a mind numbing number of reviews for Magellan, TomTom and Garmin GPS’s. Since I had comparatively good luck with my Garmin c340 (I’ll tell you about my misadventure with the nuvi 1300 afterward on in this review) I took a look at the bewildering product mix of GPS’s that Garmin produces. Each series of Garmin GPS has between two to eight variations. For example the 1300 series will include the nuvi 1300, 1300LM, 1350, 1350T, 1350LMT, 1370T, 1390T and 1390LMT. That is many of choices and that’s just for the 1300 series. You have also got the 205 series, 500 series, 705 series, 1200 series, 1400 series, 1600 series, 2200 series, 2300 series, 3700 series representing about 45 differing GPS devices.

Let me assist you if you’re as lost as I was. The “T” stands for Traffic. “L” stands for Lifetime. “M” stands for Maps, “W” stands for Widescreen and so forth. So a 1300T gives you lifetime Traffic updates whereas a 1350LMT will give you lifetime maps and traffic updates. And inside each model you’ll get varying amounts of other features like Bluetooth, the speaking of street names, photo navigation, MP3 player, 3D terrain view and such. Then you have got 2.8″ displays, 4.3″ displays and 5″ displays. You’ll have to choose what maps you want included with your GPS. Do you want or need Canada and Mexico? If be sure the model you decide has those installed by default. Or you could add them afterward I think by buying the map you need but of course that will entail spending more money. It can literally take years off your life trying to decipher all this and choose on a GPS that’s most proper for you.

My take on this is to get the most basic GPS you may be able to deal with. 4.3″ screen is most likely the best size for majority of people and cars. Truckers may want the 5″ screen. Traffic updates do not work in rural regions and many small cities. In big cities, traffic updates are of doubtful value (many people complain about this feature.) Do you really need an mp3 player in your GPS? Most likely not. Do you really care about “EcoRoute”? Most likely not. “Lane Assist” sounds really useful, and it’s when and where it works, but it does not work everywhere so it is not as useful as it sounds.

It’s not easy picking a GPS. But I chose the 1390LMT opposite to my advice to you. It has many of feature bloat. Many of the features I’ll not use and quite honestly, all I really want a GPS to do is get me to my destination as precisely as possible.

As it happens, I have both my c340 and the 1390LMT installed in my car so I can evaluate their performance at the same time, side by side. It is quite weird because on occasion they’re both talking and saying exactly the same thing at exactly the same time. Other times, like announcing forthcoming turns, the 1390LMT will speak up 1st. On occasion by just a couple seconds, other times it states the next turn as the last thing it says after announcing a last turn. For example it’ll say “Turn left on major Street then turn right in one miles.” Whereas the c340 will say “Turn left on major street” and after a while it’ll say “Turn right in point three miles.” I can not figure it out but typically the 1390LMT gives more in depth information and usually does so with a bit more advance notice, which is largely appreciated, particularly at highway speeds.

I did notice that the screen icons and menus changed somewhat between the c340 and the 1390LMT. Alike in many ways but just different enough that if you’re familiar with the old layout, the new layout will frustrate you a bit till you un learn the old way of navigating the menus/screens. One thing that really frustrates me is that “Spell Name” for a place requires an extra screen touch. With the c340 I’d just have to touch “Where To?” , then “Name Search” but with the 1390LMT I have to touch “Where To?”, then “Points of Interest” then “Spell Name.” One extra button push may not seem like many, but it’s if you aren’t used to it.

I shortly owned a nuvi 1300 about a year ago and caused by awful touchscreen responsiveness, I returned it. I am happy to report that that’s not an issue with the newer devices. Seemingly a firmware/software update some months ago addressed that and other issues. The touchscreen on the 1390LMT is quite responsive and correct.

The volume and sound quality of the 1390LMT is decent enough though the c340 had a fuller sound whereas the 1390LMT has a scratchier, more treble sound. I didn’t notice any distortion that many people have stated at 100 volume.

Screen light is good and the screen may be seen pretty well in bright light though it does wash out a little. The screen also does a pretty great job in the glare department, decreasing it to a controllable level.

What I like the most is the “Where am I?” feature. When you click that button on screen, it shows you your exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and fuel stations. You may also then save that places as a favorite. Useful.

What I like the least is when you arrive at your destination, the nuvi doesn’t generally say what side of the street it’s on. As a comparison my c340 could “Arriving at Home, on left.”

The Bluetooth works but it is not the best quality sound. I favor my Plantronics bluetooth headset Plantronics Voyager 510 Bluetooth Headset Retail Packaging. But in a pinch (like when my headset battery dies) this will work. I had no issues pairing my phone to the nuvi.

If you need your 1st time GPS, this might be a good choice, but you could save money by to get the more basic 1300LM which gives you the lifetime maps updates and dispenses with many of the non essential “features.” On the other hand, if you liVe in a big metropolitan area and you think the Traffic feature could be useful, then get one of the models that have that features.

I could most likely write many more but I have most likely bored you enough by now. I like the 1390LMT in general but do not and will not use many of the features so I should opted for the 1300LM which could provided me the major function of to get me where I have to go and lifetime maps which is vital and will save me lots of money in the long run.

Inexplicably, the nuvi 1390LMT on occasion routes me crazily. For example I was .1 mile from an expressway that could have taken me to my destination the fastest, but the GPS routed me on local roads. The same distance but could have taken much longer. I made sure that the settings were for “Fastest” not “Shortest” so I can not explain this strange behavior. It happens usually so I just go how I know to go and the Garmin will “recalculate” the path and the second time is typically the right path (or the path that I think is the best.)

I’d recommend to get the Garmin movable Friction Mount as it’ll make hiding your GPS much easier when you’re in parking garages and other places where GPS theft is a likelihood. Out of the box I noticed it had two stuck pixels. This may be not a big deal but it’s observable when driving at night and is kind of annoying.
The more vital issue that just struck me is popup ads on the screen. Every time you start driving you see them. They can pop up when you stop on the red light. When you start driving the popups go away ater not many minutes, but is not starting moving on intersection when the light switches to green requires double attention on the road ?
I find these ads obtrusive and I could rather pay or get rid of the traffic feature that causes this.
I am not a lawyer but it may be these ads are really illegal. As an example California car Code 2890 (West 2004) exactly states that any display observable to the driver is illegal, with some exemptions as well as world positioning display. But an ad popping on the GPS screen isn’t a part of positioning procedure.

So to make the story shorter here are the highlights. Do not take me wrong. The GPS is still among the best out there. But here is what I could like to get improved:

1. Popup ads. A big minus!
2.If you know the road don’t rely on the GPS to get you a better path. I noticed that the routing isn’t generally best. On occasion it’s just anecdotal. It takes you off a freeway, directs to another one, then leads through many back roads and will return close to the original freeway. The time lost is five minutes on a 15 minutes path. Note this is at night with no traffic whatsoever.
3.Traffic feature isn’t that dependable. On occasion it reports traffic when there’s literally no a single car on the road. I suspect the above mentioned mis routing may be caused by this.
4. Stated speed limitations are five miles lower or higher than the real one in about 50.

The problem is I PAID for this item, and they dont have entitlement to show me ads. Today I accidentally clicked on an ad and it froze up on me.

I called costumer support, and they told me my only alternatives are to turn off traffic, or to pay them another $50 dollars.
